Privacy notice (draft)

To confirm before launch: The date this notice takes effect, once approved

This is a draft. It describes what SMEO stores today, based on how the product works. Anything we cannot state yet is marked to be confirmed rather than guessed.

To confirm before launch: The data controller: the legal entity behind SMEO, its registered address and company number.

Who we are

SMEO (short for Sites Made Easy Online) runs this website at smeo.co.uk, and the website builder and Studio at studio.smeo.co.uk.

To confirm before launch: A contact for privacy questions.

What you tell the builder

When you build a website, the builder stores your answers so it can show and save your draft: your business name, what you do, the areas you cover, your phone number, your design choices and any words you change on the page.

If you add the optional extras, it also stores who your customers are, an email address, your opening hours and any note for the team.

Most of this is business information that is meant to appear on your website. If you are a sole trader, some of it, such as a phone number, may also be personal data.

Cookies

The builder uses a secure cookie to tie your draft to the device you are using, so you can come back to it.

To confirm before launch: A full list of cookies set by smeo.co.uk and studio.smeo.co.uk, including any on this marketing website.

Your private link

The builder gives you a private link so you can continue on another device. Treat it like a key. It is not emailed to you, because email is not set up.

Studio and your WordPress website

If you use Studio to manage a WordPress website, Studio works with that website on your behalf. Each customer can only ever see their own website.

When you upload a photo in Studio, location data is removed from it.

To confirm before launch: What Studio stores about account holders (for example, sign-in details) and for how long.

Who sees your information

A person at SMEO checks every website before it goes live, so our team sees what you send them.

To confirm before launch: The organisations that process data for SMEO (for example hosting, backups and any email provider) and where they are based.

How long we keep it

To confirm before launch: How long drafts, accounts, enquiries and backups are kept.

ContentStation

SMEO is not connected to ContentStation. If Smeo Grow is introduced, this notice needs to say what is shared and why before anything is shared.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your personal data, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to some uses of it. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

To confirm before launch: How to make a request to SMEO, and who handles it.

The short version

The builder keeps what you type so it can save your draft, and a secure cookie lets it find that draft on your device.

A person at SMEO sees your website when you send it to the team. Nothing is published automatically, and SMEO is not connected to ContentStation.

The details still to be confirmed are marked on this page rather than guessed.
